Award winning Channel Island Hotels in the Best UK Hotel Awards

photo of a beach on HermWe know the Channel Islands are beautiful, have miles of golden sandy beaches, the best weather you’re likely to get in the UK and are a great place to go for a holiday or short break but it’s good to know Trip Advisor agrees! Having just released its 2014 Best Hotel awards, we are delighted to see that 4 of the hotels we have on our books have made it into the best 25 in the UK, as voted for by Trip Advisor travellers.

The Stocks Hotel in the little island of Sark was also nominated number 9 in the top 25 small hotels – congratulations, a fantastic achievement!

Offering advice to travellers and having over 260 million online visitors, the awards cover over 3.1 million places to stay, attractions and restaurants in 24 countries worldwide. People can nominate their favourite hotels, beaches, restaurants or even their top 10 UK islands – oh, and did we tell you that both Jersey and Guernsey featured in the top 10 for 2013?

Top 10 UK Islands to Visit

Ok, so just how many islands are there in the UK that could be nominated for such an award? The answer is probably a lot more than you would think! Jersey, nominated number 2 in the 2013 awards, and Guernsey, number 10, make up around 5,000 islands in Great Britain, of which just over 800 can be ‘digitised’ or have their coastlines identified on a map. Of these around 130 have permanent residents, albeit only by 1 or 2 people in some cases. Of all the islands, Jersey is the most southerly and actually only 14 miles from the French coast. For the Channel Islands to have 2 of their islands in the top 10 really is quite a success.

Top 25 Hotels 2014

The latest Trip Advisor Travellers’ Choice Awards have been for the top 25 hotels, top 25 small hotels, top 25 bargain hotels and top 25 B&B’s and Inns in the UK and Worldwide.

Nominated 6th in the UK best hotel category was Braye Beach Hotel  in Alderney. Guests warmed to the camaraderie of the staff and their willingness to help whenever possible. Interestingly, many visitors seemed to enjoy a winter holiday here as much as a summer one due to the spectacular views from the bar which overlook the beach, as well as the thoughtful decanter of sherry and jug of real milk in the bedrooms! Running at a close 7th, Longueville Manor in Saint Saviour, Jersey, was also praised for its cosy fires and winter accommodation as well as an extensive cheeseboard selection and excellent menu. Restaurants were definitely high up on visitors’ lists of priorities as The Atlantic Hotel  in St Brelade, Jersey, managed to be placed at number 20 for the Best UK Hotel 2014 and its restaurant, The Ocean, scooped a prestigious number 6 in the favourite Top 10 UK restaurants 2013 category. Having gained a Michelin star in 2007, the restaurant has also been awarded four rosettes in the AA Restaurant Guide for 2014. However, the friendliness of staff also featured highly in people’s recommendations. Greenhills Country Manor in St Peter, Jersey, was also highly praised for its hospitality and welcome, completing the list at number 25 in the Best UK Hotel 2014 section.

Top 25 Small Hotels 2014

Not only is Sark a remote and unusual island due to being car-free but it officially has the 6th Best Small Hotel in the UK according to the Trip Advisor awards. One reviewer mentioned it was the first time she had ever been given the option of walking, cycling or going by horse and trap to an hotel! Stocks Hotel  was praised all round with special mention to the superb refurbishment recently undertaken which manages to balance retaining the character of its 16th Century origins with a contemporary feel. Many reviewers mentioned they had booked the hotel as a special occasion and each one felt they had been thoroughly treated.

The Channel Islands also have the Best Beaches

According to the 2013 Trip Advisor Awards Jersey and Guernsey also have some of the best beaches in the UK. The golden sand and clear sea at St Brelades Bay Beach in Jersey reached number 10 in the best 25 UK beaches and Shell Beach in Herm, Guernsey was placed at number 17. Both beaches were praised for their cleanliness and breathtaking views and whilst the larger beach at St Brelades offers pretty flower gardens, shops, cafes and restaurants along its promenade, in Herm it was the tranquillity and one little cafe selling tasty ice cream that was highly recommended.

What else will 2014 have in store for the Channel Islands?

It’s still not too late to nominate your favourites for other 2014 Trip Advisor Awards. The awards themselves come from the reviews left by holidaymakers and offer a genuine insight into a place. Would you like to know if somewhere has a comfy bed or good room service? Or perhaps you were enchanted by the views and the warm welcome you received and you want to advise others? Then check out Trip Advisor or add to the reviews.

Of course we would love to know your favourites as well, so feel free to follow us on Google+ and Facebook Flyjersey or Facebook Flyguernsey and let us know your favourite Channel Islands places, attractions and accommodation.  Perhaps we can start our own awards, hmm, now that’s a thought …
