Jersey’s Battle of Flowers

Floral fun and festivities this summer

This year Jersey’s spectacular Battle of Flowers will take place on Thursday 14th and Friday 15th August. The carnival extravaganza has to be one of the most dazzling events on the calendar with its daytime procession ready to entertain the crowds. Expect music of every genre, dancing and wonderfully artistically themed floral floats. The party atmosphere then continues with a magical illuminated moonlight parade culminating in a fireworks finale.

This annual event began in 1902 and save for the war years, has taken place each year and become a major highlight for summertime in Jersey. Horse drawn carriages have been replaced with elaborate animated floats and the original ‘battle’ tradition of hurling petals at the crowd in order to entice them to throw them back may have stopped but the flowers and fun remain the focus.

Battle entries take months of preparation and all ages take part competing for coveted prizes. In the preceding months local girls compete for the title of ‘Miss Battle’ and younger contestants for ‘Miss Junior Battle’. ‘Mr Battle’ however is usually a well known celebrity and this year the honour falls to former X-factor runner up and tv personality Ray Quinn.

The Battle of Flowers has grown to be one of Europe’s biggest floral carnivals with hundreds of floats decorated with fresh and paper flowers ready to be judged. Jersey is renown for its floral displays but the floats are now so big and elaborate that boxes of chrysanthemums are flown in from the UK and Holland all ready to be intricately applied to the floats the night before. If you’ve never seen a floral dalek before, now might be your chance!

Spectators are actively encouraged to take part in voting for their favourite entries and the parade arena along Victoria Avenue has standing and seated spaces. However this is one event that is very popular and attracts around 20,000 people each year.
